November 19, 2009, two EcoSystems reef units were installed in 23 feet of water at the Alabama Gulf State Park Pier under the State's Artificial Reef Program. These were added to the twelve "Florida Limestone" reefs deployed early this year. The EcoSystems units are part an experimental program to study EcoSystems in areas of high wave energy. These reefs replace a single unit that was studied for one year, but was removed when the old pier was demo'd. It will be interesting to see how the EcoSystems preform in comparison to the Florida Limestone units both in productivity, types of species and durability.
